Use the Wizards

If it is the first time you are doing a particular task, check and see if there is a Wizard which will take you through the program step by step. Publisher, Powerpoint and Word have Wizards for most things and Excel has a Wizard for charts.

Once you have created the basic article with the Wizard, you can then go back and customise it to make it unique.

Right Hand Mouse Click

It does not matter where you are, right hand hand mouse clicking will call up a menu of options that are available to you. For example if you want to add text to an object that you have drawn, right hand mouse clicking over the object will bring up a menu which has 'Add Text' as one of the options.

If you do not see the menu options that you want, try moving the mouse over the object so that the cursor changes and then right hand click again.

Right hand mouse clicking over words or buttons in the grey prompt boxes will bring up the Question "What's This". Use this feature to find out what unknown icons do.

Universal Shortcuts

For those who spend a lot of time on computers, short cuts become a way of life. Listed below are a few shortcuts which work in most applications with explanations of what they do. There are more lists of shortcuts linked to the tips on Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint. Just click on the Shortcuts button to access the lists.

Use Help

If you get stuck, try searching asking for help. It is easiest to use the index and type in what you are trying to do. When you find the step by step instructions, leave them open and follow them. Close the window when you are done.

Some programs (such as PowerPoint) have a 'show me' option which will show you the steps that you need to take. To use 'Contextualised Help' hit Shift+F1. Your cursor will change into a cursor with a question mark. Clicking on various icons and menu options will bring up a box explaining what they do.
